Horse Racing in Victoria

June 22nd, 2009 Posted in Horse Racing | No Comments »

The continuation of jumps races in Victoria has saved the lives of horses, trainers and jockeys alike. The world of horse jumps races survives another day, benefiting all the members that belong to it. If this was not the case and the races had been banned, people would be left jobless, dreams would have been crushed and horse would have been killed. People arguing against the races do not realise the negative impact it would have had on all the people involved.

Horses are not just a hobby; they are a lifestyle. People in the horse racing industry rely on them for their food, their house, their livelihood. Without them or the races they run in, they would have nothing. If the races were to be banned we would be taking away the lives of trainers, jockeys and even breeders. Not all of these people are making millions or living in luxury, but they get to do something they love every single day, and get paid for it. If only we all could be so lucky.

These horses are bred for horse racing. Whether it is gallop racing or flat racing, it is what they are made to do. Some are good at it, some not so good at it, but either way it gives them a purpose in life. If there was no jumps racing industry, or if it suddenly came to an end, these horses would be killed. The owners and trainers would no longer have any use for them and they would become a financial burden. These people love their horses so much they would choose to end their lives instead of letting them suffer.

We have made the right decision in letting these weekend races continue. If they were banned, would gallop races be the next to be attacked? Then would the sport of equestrian be questioned? There is a risk involved in everything we do, what better reason to risk our lives than for something we love.

Horse Racing History

June 7th, 2009 Posted in Horse Racing | No Comments »

The sport of horse racing dates back thousands of years, almost as long as humans have been keeping records.

In early roman days, horses were bred and raced as part of chariot racing, popularised by the epic movie Ben Hur.

This form of racing required the driver to mount the chariot in a standing position as it was drawn along by teams of up to four horses.

Thoroughbred racing as a sport was made popular by English knights returning from the crusades around 1100AD.

The English knights brought with them swift Arabian horses, which, when bred with English horses of exceptional stamina, combined to produce horses that were able run at top speeds for great distances.

A measure of one’s horse was therefore made a good way to earn money, generally in a two horse race over a set distance.

Organised racing began at the turn of the eighteenth century as groups of up to seven horses competed over set distances for prize money while eager fans could place a wager on which horse they felt had the best chance of winning.

Without betting, horse racing would not exist as it is the thrill of the punt that drives most racing enthusiasts – and capital raised by betting agencies that often provides the prize money.

Horse racing has evolved into one of the most followed spectator sports in the world today, and due to the lucrative nature of the sport, there is no wonder it’s called the sport of kings.

Horse Racing – Should Jumps Racing be allowed to continue?

May 28th, 2009 Posted in Horse Racing | No Comments »

Jumps racing, simply, should not be allowed to continue. Suspending the sport was the right call.

To place your horse racing bet {coral sports:Link:click here}!

The rate of deaths has been too high, the pain too much.

Trainers vented their frustration at the sport’s suspension – and understandably, too, given they have spent months getting their horses ready for the jumps season.

They would now be rejoicing, after the season was allowed to continue.

But that said, given the recent incidents, the decision is staggering. In Victoria, 13 horses, on average, die each year in the jumps arena. All sports have a degree of danger attached, but we can’t justify continuing such a brutal sport. Whether it be steeplechase or hurdles, the cons for continuing outweigh the pros.

As racing minister Rob Hulls said in the Herald Sun: “The season has just started but it has been a bad start and it is going to be more and more difficult if we continue to have the number of falls and death that we will be able to argue that jumps racing has a future.”

Jockeys have been injured seriously, too, and, despite what jumps racing contributes to the economy in these tough times, it cannot, and should not, continue. So a punter can win some money is not reason enough.

The topics of animal cruelty rates higher.

So what to do? Punters have enough options as far as racing is concerned – bet on a traditional flat-track race if needed.

But, jumps racing should not start-up again. There has been enough pain for all involved. If there is more, brace yourself for the uprising.

Racing Update – Rocket Man

May 28th, 2009 Posted in Overseas | No Comments »

Singapore’s KrisFlyer International Sprint is set fro one of the greatest show downs in recent memory as thoroughbred champion Takeover target takes on crowd favourite an unbeaten Rocket Man this Saturday.

To place your horse bet {coral sports:Link:click here}!

Rocket Man had been the red hot favourite after seven wins from seven starts, and each of those coming by huge margins.

However Takeover Target proved last start that the nine year old still has plenty of motor when he strolled home to take out the three hundred thousand dollar Goodwood Handicap at Morphetville two weeks ago at the remarkably short price of $1.55.

In fact so short was the price that up to twelve horses were withdrawn from the race after being given no hope of beating the sprinter

Rocket Man has become a cult figure in Hong Kong and the three year old has been touted as the next world beater and seemingly does not know how to lose.

Usually very fast away, the young Rocket Man will start from barrier nine – the widest out he has started in seven starts.

Takeover Target, however has had a dream barrier draw that was met by wild celebrations as he was allotted barrier number three – a perfect draw that saw him move into equal favourite with Rocket Man.

All eyes will no doubt be fixed squarely on Singapore as punters eagerly await the result that will either see a true champion go another notch clear of his rivals or a changing of the guard.

Horse Racing

May 18th, 2009 Posted in Horse Racing | No Comments »

The jumps racing industry has suffered another huge blow as animal rights activists apply increasing pressure on Victorian Minister for Racing Rob Hulls to have the sport banned in Australia.

To bet on horse racing online {sportspromo:Link:click here}!

After already attracting attention following the deaths of four horses already this season following nasty falls in jump races across Victoria, the death of three horses on the one day at the home of jumps racing forced the suspension of the carnival indefinitely.

Warnambool has long been renowned as one of, if not the, premier cards on the jumps racing calendar but in another black day for the sport three horses were destroyed after they failed to clear jumps in three separate races.

Jumps racing stalwart and Warnambool local David “Butch” Londregan made the claim that if jumps racing were to be outlawed in Victoria he would personally shoot each and every one of his six champion thoroughbreds and deliver their heads to the office of Mr Hulls.

In an extraordinary display, Mr Londregan unsaddled his horse Infusion in the mounting yard ahead of a race on Thursday and threatened withdraw the horse from the race and shoot it immediately following the carnival.

After a heated exchange with stewards the horse was re-saddled though Londregan stands by every word.

He claims that without jumps racing the town of Warnambool’s economy would be crippled indefinitely.

Having nowhere to race his horses and unable to afford their upkeep, he would have no choice but destroy his six horses, he said.

On a brighter note, horse racing (weekend races) had one of it’s best races last weekend and it looks like the future races this year will be even better!

How a quinella works!

April 21st, 2009 Posted in Horse Racing | No Comments »

Horse Racing – There are literally hundreds of ways to increase your winning odds when betting with the TAB but none is more simple (and at times more effective) than the good old quinella.

To place your bet {coral sports:Link:click here!}

A quinella gives the punter the opportunity to back a first and second place getter in order to increase the dividends paid on each and every dollar invested.

The punter can back a straight up quinella in which they are required to pick a first and second place getter but they must get home in that particular order for the ticket to pay.

The other option on Horse Racing betting is to back a boxed quinella in which the punter can pick any two horses to finish first and second in either order.

Of course the former will pay a much greater dividend than the latter as the odds of picking a first and second in the correct order are much greater.

There are generally two schools of thought when placing a quinella.

The punter can pick the outright favourite and the second favourite which will generally only pay a little more than just putting money on the favourite itself, unless a straight quinella is picked.

The second school of thought is to pick the outright favourite to come first when they are very short priced then pick a roughie to come home second to increase the dividend markedly.

Either way the quinella is a good way to increase dividends though a boxed quinella can often leave you wondering why you didn’t just back the favourite on the nose.

How to Pick a winning Horse.

April 21st, 2009 Posted in Horse Racing | No Comments »

Horse Racing – Asking the question how to pick a winning horse is like trying to predict when you’ll see your next shooting star or which instant scratchy will be a winner.

{coral sports:Link:Bet on horse racing here}

Many have spent their entire lives scouring form guides, reading news stories, listening to jockeys and trainers in the pub in order to invent a winning formula that will set them on the road to easy street.

The fact of the matter is that at times a pretty young thing in a dress at the Cup will have as much chance as picking a winner as the most seasoned of punters who frequents the TAB daily.

However there are some steps that can be taken in order to ensure that at the very best you have an ‘educated’ guess and increase your chances of picking a winner.

Generally the bigger races are harder to pick when going on form as they are hotly contested by the best horses in the country.

Metropolitan and provincial gallops, pacers and greyhounds are by no means easier to pick but generally offer a better chance of picking a winner based on previous form.

All good form guides list such vital information as how the horse or hound has faired in it’s previous four races, the condition and distance of the track on which it raced, as well as winning or losing margins and times for the race.

The punter can then judge the form of the horse or dog compared with the odds offered by the TAB and toss up which is the best option in terms of value and chances of winning.
