Derby Day is Australia’s greatest racing day

October 30, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup

Generally regarded as the single greatest day in Australian racing, Derby Day will be held at Flemington this Saturday, with a capacity 10 race program.

It is highlighted by Whobegotyou in the day’s feature. The Mark Kavanagh trained gelding is $1.60 in fixed odds markets this week.

The Mackinnon Stakes will also be run at Group 1 level, with the likes of Littorio and Sirmione looking to find top form heading into next week’s 2008 Melbourne Cup.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is another G1 event on the star studded program, with the Gai Waterhouse trained Northern Meteor the likely favourite.

The Myer Classic is run at G1 level for the mares, with Forensics looking to atone for an unlucky last start effort at the same course. Bart Cummings shoots for his 250th Group 1 win with Mimi Lebrock, while Absolut Glam and Bellini Rose are other top hopes for the 1600m test.

Derby Day of course heads off four great days of action at Flemington as Australia’s racing year reaches its crescendo over the next seven days – with the latest Melbourne Cup Odds showing some interesting moves.

Efficient Out of Melbourne Cup Odds

October 29, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup

As the Melbourne Cup gets closer, the stories get bigger – and today’s biggest story is that last years winner of the Cup, Efficient, has been ruled out of the 2008 Melbourne Cup Odds!

This has come as quite a shock to all of us, but this morning, Efficient’s owner Lloyd Williams confirmed that his 5yo was out – injuring the fetlock in his front offside leg.

William’s admitted this morning that he and his team were devastated that the Melbourne Cup would be without Efficient this year – the horse that many experts predicted could upset the overseas horses.

So it now comes down to these overseas horses, and in Melbourne Cup Odds we see Septimus and Mad Rush continue to hold down the top spots.

Melbourne Cup Odds – Countdown Continues

October 28, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup

Racing at Moonee Valley did little to upset the market for next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup Odds, where the international runners continue to dominate.

Ballydoyle maestro Aidan O’Brien arrives in Australia today to oversee the finishing touches to Cup favourite Septimus’ preparation.

O’Brien saddled up his 22nd Group 1 winner this calendar year when Yeats won in France at the weekend and he is now just three shy of the World record set by US based Bobby Frankel in 2003.

Maldivian was able to control the Cox Plate from the front and bookmakers felt the runs of the Lloyd Williams pair Zipping and C’Est La Guerre had merit, as both tightened up for the Cup following their solid efforts at Moonee Valley.

Mad Rush remains in strong contention and with rain predicted for Melbourne next week, he is reported to have no troubles handling such conditions.

The Caulfield Cup form held up quite well on Cox Plate day, with Maldivian among the beaten division at Caulfield before dominating from the front at Moonee Valley.

On the other side of the coin, Ice Chariot ran very well in the Caulfield Cup but could only manage third in a modest MV Cup field.

Latest Cox Plate Odds

October 23, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup

After much anticipation at the beginning of the spring carnival, we are once more left with a Cox Plate that doesn’t quite capture the imagination as it has in years gone by.

Originally it was pitted as a dual between four-year-old stars Weekend Hussler and Light Fantastic – but neither will be at Moonee Valley this Saturday and certainly they won’t be seen in the Melbourne Cup Odds

There was also great hope for Pompeii Ruler, who ran a brave 3rd in 2006, to return, but he has again succumbed to injury.

Then there’s Maldivian, the heartbreak story of last year’s spring carnival. He is set to start on Saturday, but his form is well down on 12 months ago.

Many racing fans were hoping Mark Kavanagh would have a change of heart and start his outstanding three-year-old Whobegotyou in the Cox Plate Odds.

The son of Street Cry would in all likelihood start a clear favourite for the race after demolishing his Caulfield Guineas rivals earlier in the month.

But Kavanagh has stuck to his guns and will instead start him in the AAMI Vase over the same course and distance on Saturday.

That leaves two gals fighting it out for favouritism at the head of the market.

Princess Coup earned the top billing after proving far too strong in the Kelt Capital Stakes at her most recent outing. The form from that race stood up very strongly on Saturday, with the second and third placegetters, Red Ruler and Nom Du Jeu, both running cracking races in the Caulfield Cup.

The other vying for favouritism is Samantha Miss, unbeaten in four Sydney starts this spring.

Form says she has been beating ordinary horses, with those behind her well beaten in last Wednesday’s Thousand Guineas.

But she has been beating them with ease and with only a featherweight to contend with on Saturday, she is certain to have plenty of admirers.

Zipping, who has been around for quite a number of seasons without ever winning a Group 1 race, is also in the mix, after running a slashing third in the Turnbull Stakes at his most recent start.  He is also a chance in Melbourne Cup Betting

Mick Price was to have Pompeii Ruler and Light Fantastic, but with that duo having gone by the wayside, he will start Alamosa, a most impressive winner of the Toorak Handicap at his latest outing.

Latest COX PLATE ODDS are:

Samantha Miss – 3.90
Princess Coup – 4.00
Zipping – 9.00
Maldavian – 11.00
Alamosa – 12.00
Sirimone – 14.00
Theseo – 16.00
Master O’Reilly – 21.00
C’est La Guerre – 21.00
Raheeb – 31.00
Zarita – 31.00
Gallant Tess – 41.00

Melbourne Cup Betting Picture Blown Wide Open

October 21, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup

Saturday’s Caulfield Cup changed the complexion of this year’s Melbourne Cup Betting, with most now believing an imported galloper will take the prize.

The win by Godolphin’s All The Good and the slashing fourth placing to Mad Rush has seen both firm dramatically in betting for this year’s big race.

Furthermore, Septimus – who didn’t even race at the weekend – firmed up to be a clear favourite, on the basis that he is rated clearly superior to All The Good and Mad Rush in Europe.

Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way, with many of the so called World’s best stayers – like Drum Taps, Double Trigger, Oscar Schindler and Yeats – struggling to cope with the pressure of the Melbourne Cup.

It has been the less heralded runners that have fared better.  Vintage Crop was the outsider of the two imports when winning in 1993, while Media Puzzle was rated clearly inferior to Vinnie Roe in his homeland, but adapted beautifully to the Australian conditions.

Similarly, Delta Blues was sent out at more than twice the price of stablemate Pop Rock when taking the 2006 Cup.

So punters don’t often get it right with the imports. Indeed, Godolphin’s best efforts in the Melbourne Cup came via seconds to Central Park and Give The Slip – both rated 50/1 chances by Australian punters.

But it does look like the local contingent are up against it this year and the Melbourne Cup Odds show that.

Perhaps the New Zealanders are our best chance of securing a ‘local’ victory, with AJC Derby winner Nom Du Jeu running a slashing second in the Caulfield Cup.

He though has to overcome a 78 year hoodoo, as Phar Lap was the last AJC Derby winner to claim the Cup as a 4yo.

Last year’s Cup winner Efficient is still the highest rated of the Australian runners and he will go into the race without another start, with owner Lloyd Williams electing to bypass Saturday’s Cox Plate.
