Sportingbet.com.au – Melbourne Cup

January 15, 2009 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup No Comments →

The Melbourne Cup has come to a close, and on the whole, it was a pretty exciting event, albeit there were not many surprises. The widely watched Blake Shinn was hailed as a superstar of the future when he led Bird of Fire all the way to win Saturday’s Group Two Matriach Stakes at Flemington.

BET NOW

Although the four year old mare posted a dead heat with Miss Badoura at Moonee Valley, Shinn burst forward from gate 15 to win the face in the 2000m feature. The rides, Shinn also won much praise for his masterful ride that saw him winning the race.

Under the pushing of Shunn, Bird of Fire won by a half head to Tan Tat De Lago with the next in line, El Danna another two lengths behind. This race may remind many of last year’s race by Shinn, who won with Peter Moody trained Hidden Strings, who also came out from gate 16 to win an all out race, leading all the way.

Based on her win, Bird Of Fire has doubled her career earnings and do not need to share the spoils this time. Now, the mare has four wins and nine minor placing from her total of 19 starts. Many people found her win deserving, given that she has run so many seconds of which many were due to her bad luck more than anything else.

Finally, the mare has outran her bad luck, and posted a historical win and have won much praise and perhaps relief to many.

Iasbet.com.au – Bauer

January 11, 2009 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup No Comments →

English stayer Bauer, has avoided being stripped of its breathtaking second place following a stewards inquiry into allegations of illegal treatment prior to the race.

In one of the narrowest finishes in cup history, Bauer flashed home from back in the field to finish behind www.iasbet.com.au – the Bart Cummings trained Viewed by the slightest of margins.

BET NOW

Trainer Luca Cumani’s daughter, Francesca, accompanied the champion stayer to Melbourne where it was held in a quarantine centre at Sandown.

Cumani maintained his innocence right throughout the inquiry stating that he had not ordered the treatment and in his eyes has done nothing contrary to Australian Racing standards.

Bauer’s swabs all returned negative results leaving the country mystified as to what could have possibly gone wrong.

However after a full inquiry lasting almost a week, stewards conceded that although the horse did receive treatment from Victorian Racing official that should have left it ineligible to run in the Cup, the treatment was not ordered by, nor overseen by the Trainer and hence he was not at fault.

In every other country in the world, electroshock treatment is not considered to help the horse in anyway run better than it otherwise would have run without it and as such horses are generally allowed to run the day after treatment.

In Australia though, horses must have a weeks break before running in any race.

Bauer’s owners will hang on to the $835, 000 second place prize check while the official results of the race will remain unchanged.

Sportingbet.co.au – Melbourn Cup Tips

December 19, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup No Comments →

This year’s Melbourne Cup sees the biggest contingent of genuine contenders from overseas and could see the Cup leave the country once again.

The so-called ‘raiders’ are some of the finest stayers on the planet and are truly testament to the profile of the Melbourne Cup and its place as one of – if not the – premier racing event in the world today.

BET NOW

Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien has three of the cups more highly fancied horses in Septimus, Alessandro Volta and Honolulu.

Septimus is widely regarded as the best stayer in the world at the moment while his two stable mates are no slouches either, having chalked up convincing wins in this year’s build up.

Bart Cummings will run two horses this year with Viewed and Saab Quality winner Moatize and will lead the Australian contingent looking to keep the Cup here.

No melbouren cup is complete without a big grey mare in the mix and Barbaricus is exactly that.

The grey almost held out short priced Theseo to finish second is Saturday’s Mackinnon Stakes and traveled very well over the 2500m.

Cest La Guerre is considered on of the top local hopes and trainer John Sadler will no doubt have the horse in perfect condition to give it every chance against its more highly favoured foreign counterparts.

This year’s Cup will prove to be one the tightest in recent history and betting is sure to reflect that.

Septimus will no doubt start as short priced favourite and from him on you could throw a blanket over the rest of the field in terms of odds.

The Melbourne Cup is one of the hardest races to pick from a punters perspective and this year’s race should prove to be no exception.

Melbourne Cup

December 09, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup No Comments →

The drama surrounding this year’s Melbourne Cup continues to build following accusations against Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien and contrary tactics he may use to ensure his number one runner, Septimus, has every chance of winning.

BET NOW

O’Brien made remarks last week about the inconsistent pace of the Melbourne Cup, particularly last year, sparking rumours that he may use one, or both of his other runners Honalulu and Alessandro Volta may be used as pacemakers rather than genuine race contenders.

According to the rules of the race, and every other race in fact, horses must be ridden to give that individual horse, and that horse only, the best possible chance of winning the race,

Septimus too out the Irish St Leger thus stamping its authority as on of the worlds premiere stayers.

Honalulu and Alessandro Volta are no slouches over the two-mile either but neither are anywhere near as fancied as this year’s short priced favourite.

Race officials have viewed previous races in which O’Brien has fielded two or more horses to establish whether or not there may be a pattern developing in his race tactics and if so, how to identify them on the day.

The allegations come amid fears that Australian horses will miss out entirely on the Cup spoils as this year features the strongest field of ‘cup raiders’ (international horses) in the history of the race.

Although some a crying sour grapes over an Irishmen who is in the box seat to take home Australian Sports most coveted prize, contrary tactics and conduct are not view lightly on Australian soil and will be punished accordingly.

Melbourne Cup Tips and Preview

November 03, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup No Comments →

It seems everyone is expecting an international victory in tomorrow’s $5.5million Melbourne Cup, with the Aussies given little hope of repelling the European invasion.

Sign up now for our FREE Melbourne Cup Tips (including ALL RACES) by entering your details below – then read on for the Melbourne Cup Preview.

In fact, it’s a New Zealander in Nom Du Jeu being given the best hope of saving the Cup going to Europe for a third time.

Since Vintage Crop won in 1993, European horses have become increasingly effective at Flemington, dominating the placings in recent years, with most of the fancied runners racing well.

However it also remains a fact that only one Euro horse since Vintage Crop – another Dermot Weld trained runner in Media Puzzle – has been able to lift the Cup, despite punters wagering millions on them each year when they Bet On Melbourne Cup

The Cup went the way of Japan two years back before the NZ-bred Efficient gave Australian connections victory last year.

It should be noted though that three-time winner Makybe Diva was bred in Europe, as was the 94 winner Jeune, so the strike rate starts to look a little better when you take that into account!

A recent them has been to have a run in Australia before tackling the Cup. Media Puzzle did that in his year by winner the Geelong Cup, while Delta Blues and Pop Rock both ran in the Caulfield Cup in 2006.

Last year’s runner-up Purple Moon also ran at Caulfield before his Flemington tilt.

To that end, punters are rallying behind Mad Rush, who turned in a superb trial when 4th in the Caulfield Cup. He has the combination of Luca Cumani and Damien Oliver, who teamed up with Purple Moon last year.

Conversely, Septimus has been easy in the market, with punters wary of the so-called ‘best stayer in the world’ tag, which has dogged the likes of Yeats and Double Trigger in their Melbourne Cup Odds tilts.

Let’s look at the main chances (in saddlecloth order):

1 Septimus: Comes off 13L win in the Irish St Leger – a race that Vintage Crop was successful in before his historic 2003 Cup win. Vinnie Roe, a brave 4th and 2nd in his first two Cup tilts, was also a multiple winner of that race. Prepared by Aidan O’Brien, the World’s leading trainer of G1 winners this year.

3 Honolulu: Arrives in career best form and had form behind Purple Moon last year. Quite often it’s the outsider of the big stables that performs well.

5 Nom Du Jeu: Ran a slashing Cup trial when second in the Caulfield Cup and bred to relish this trip. Showers around Melbourne today won’t dim his chances

8 Mad Rush: Should have finished closer in the Caulfield Cup and trainer now knows what it takes to win in Australia. Looks to have had the perfect preparation and coming good at the right time.

12 Bauer: Stablemate of Mad Rush who won the Geelong Cup. Geelong form has stood up in the Melbourne Cup for a few years now and form behind him has already been franked.

18 Profound Beauty: Formlines tie in very well with Septimus and she looks well weighted. Trainer is slightly concerned about the 3200m, but if she runs out the trip, looks a major player here.

22 Alessandro Volta: The outsider of Aidan O’Brien’s trio and comes off a poor last start performance on wet track. But his best form earlier in the year, including a 4th in the Irish Derby, is well up to winning a race like this.

23 Barbaricus: By noted speed sire Lion Hunter, but has shown an ability to stay and his last two runs have been as good as any horse leading into this race. Now looks beautifully weighted and win wouldn’t surprise.
