Melbourne Cup Betting

With just a few days until the 2011 Melbourne Cup, we have a clear favourite – last years’ winner Americain – at odds of 4/1 or ($5). Even with the top weight in the race and a terrible draw, this horse is drawing huge bets for knowledgeable punters and once a year punters alike. And we have to agree – on paper Americain looks pretty good.

But there are 23 other horses in the Melbourne Cup – the race that stops a nation.  Who else can go close?  Second pick in the bookies ring is the talented number 3 Dunaden (at $6.50).  This horse certainly cannot be ruled out, with some very nice form leading up to The Cup.  On the third line of betting at 11/1 (or $12) is Lucas Cranach and Niwot.  Now here are a couple of horses worth keeping your eye on.  In fact, Niwot is our early pick based on form and the light weight that the horse has to carry around the 3200m Melbourne Cup course.

Other notable runners are Jukebox Jury ($14), Mourayan ($14), At First Sight ($14), Unusual Suspect ($26) and Lost in the Moment ($26).  There is certainly a lot of value for the astute punter this year.  But that is, of course, dependant on American being beaten – we believe this is quite possible.

Going into a Sweepstake and normally never get the winner – you might want to look out for possible last placers for that, so called, loser prize.  Look out for horses that virtually have no chance of winning such as Hawk Island ($101), Saptapadi ($101) and Older Than Time ($101).
