The Big Guns Are Back

August 30, 2008 By: Trix Category: melbourne cup No Comments →

This weekend’s G2 Memsie Stakes features no less than 11 Group 1 winners in the field, headed by Weekend Hussler, who levelled Kingston Town’s record of six Group 1 wins in a season in 2007-08.

The Hussler went under as an odds-on favourite first up, but trainer Ross McDonald is supremely confident the son of Hussonet will bounce back to winning form at Caulfield.

The main danger appears to be the West Aussie Scenic Blast, who was a convincing winner first up at Caulfield two weeks ago.

This fellow was no match for Weekend Hussler last spring, but money indicates he has improved significantly this campaign.

Sportingbet Australia reported that he was backed to win $2million should he take out this year’s Cox Plate.

Meanwhile, they have taken bets of $40,000 and $10,000 on him to win the Memsie, with his price slashed from $6 to $4.80.

The Memsie also includes Maldivian, who will be looking to build on a poor 2nd up record. The son of Zabeel will be better placed later in his campaign and it would be a surprise to see him win tomorrow.

The Caulfield meeting also includes the McNeil Stakes, won last year by Scenic Blast and the year before in a thriller by Miss Finland over Haradasun.

This year’s field looks a classy one, with promising winter performers Tindal and Whobegotyou looking to measure up to the horses that raced in top two-year-old company last year.
