Here is a general run-down and racing tips:

WIN: The horse you select must win or you lose your bet.

EACH-WAY: Your bet is split in two. Half of it is on the horse to win the race, while the other half is for a place finish (second or third). This is a safer option and ensures all bases are covered. For example, if you place $10 on a horse each-way, and it finishes second, you will receive the payout on a place finish for a $5 bet.

PLACE: Simply, if your horse finishes in the top-three, your horse race betting is successful.

FIRST4: Some betting agencies offer this in races with four or more runners. You must select the top-four, in correct order, for your bet to win.

BOX FIRST4: Can select any number of horses but, within your selections, you must have the top-four place-getters in the race.

QUINELLA: Choose two horses, and if they finish first and second, regardless of the order, your bet wins.

EXACTA: Similar to a quinella in that the punter makes two selections for first and second. But the horses must finish in the nominated order for the bet to win.

TRIFECTA: Select the top-three in their correct order at the finish for a successful trifecta.
